Nowadays each web designer must have an online place (the more, the better) where he exposes some of his best works. The ordinary people became immune to expressions as “I am your solution” or “our team is the best in town” and they need solid prove that reveals the skills.
Therefore, having a portfolio is not rocket science and not something astonishing ready to conduct all the clients to its owner, it’s only a normality; the clear evidence of the talent and abilities of someone. Much more, there are so many amazing designers and portfolios that it’s unbelievably hard to resist in the community and to make a living from these activities.
Many people say that quality will ever be appreciated and that once you have uploaded some amazing items on a portfolio surely the success is near and the clients will pay much money but the actual context doesn’t demonstrate the validity of this information. Therefore, the conclusion is pretty simple: a strong portfolio isn’t enough. It’s very recommendable to have stunning pieces for the admirers but don’t expect to become instantly assaulted with offers from thousands of clients. It sounds a little bit too sad but the reasons bellow are the logical hypothesis of this conclusion. The positive aspect is the fact that a portfolio may be successful and bring money & reconnaissance from people.
1.Multitude of solutions, less time
This idea starts with a simple fact: what does a person interested in the services of a web designer do? Simply, he puts some keywords in the text box of Google and visits some websites until he founds one to satisfy his needs. Anyway, he visits maximum 20-30 websites and finally decides, but the search engines give him millions of solutions. As soon as not all of them are visited, the judgment is superficial and it’s possible to neglect some very good opportunities. The potential client can’t be judged, he doesn’t have enough time to select “correctly” hence it appears a second tip that proves the inefficiency of a portfolio that is ignored.
2.To visit a portfolio it must be optimized
The precedent example, of the potential client searching for the best solution is very relevant. An optimized portfolio, that appears on the first page of various keywords will pretty sure attract some clients. Willing or not, it’s in our nature to be lazy and people will be satisfied with only a couple of admired portfolios and the decision will be made on superficial basements. The idea of this paragraph is that a portfolio that isn’t optimized, that isn’t friendly with the search engines is improbable to attract visitors and then to turn them into clients. The immediate action must be the optimization of the portfolios and each dollar spend in this action surely, sooner or later will be amortized.
3.Marketing and branding- as important as the quality of the items?
We live in a speeding society where no one has time for nothing and listening to promo materials is the last relaxant activity. In spite of that, marketing and branding are very common and of course, some principles of these are mandatory for the success of the portfolios. Perhaps the role of these is somehow overestimated but it’s capital. In fact, there is a clear distinction: the marketing and optimization for the search engines are the components that assure the necessary conditions for a website to be visited while the quality of the items and the prices of the services provided assure the profitability of it. Across time, a specific fame is created around a portfolio and, in addition to good testimonials, will act as a magnet for clients, they are trustier in the skills of the owner. It’s called more “scientifically”, the power of branding and any portfolio owner must be aware of this magical entity.
4.Client’s opinion: “Everything is the same, dull and boring”
The websites can’t substantially differ one from another and people disregard this reality, they want something original, but at the same time very accessible…almost impossible. A strong portfolio must not only be qualitative but it must be a masterwork, the items exposed should attract the eyes of people else it’s hard to imagine the success of the portfolio. Briefly: pay tenfold attention to the works presented, the number of clients depends on them.
5.Not all the visitors are automatically clients
Unfortunately, people searching for a specialist in online environment may decide to hold over or renounce to him. The pretty high amount of money required for a quality service may be another factor that contributes to a low conversion visitor-client. A well marketed portfolio, optimized for search engines may present the most original and interesting projects but setting unrealistic prices won’t bring money to spend all the life in luxury. Another aspect that may attract or scare the clients is the communication with them. If the owner of the portfolio is very arrogant and inaccessible, the chances of getting a project are very low.
Under these circumstances it is profitable or barely beneficial to have a portfolio? Undoubtedly yes, but behind it, there must be a smart strategy. Expecting to launch it today and tomorrow to have tens of clients is foolish. The winning strategy must be based on patience. Time will decide the success of the strategy. The next step of this strategy must be the quality of the items exposed, the owner of it must invest money and resources to promote it in order to be visited but if these are decent or poor, the visitors will ignore any offer and all the efforts will be in vain.
Once the decision is made, the projects done and the ones selected to be exposed are cool and interesting, a smart move is to create the respective portfolio, usually a splendid website. A very common mistake is to build the respective website but a portfolio must be more than that. A good idea is to use as many as possible ways of promoting the projects, there are tons of websites that allow the uploading of works and people are visiting these frequently. The hire of a SEO specialist is another mandatory step unless you are one, anyway the portfolio must be optimized to be the “favorite of the search engines”. As a last mandatory step, there is the marketing of it and a very good opportunity are the social networks, pay great attention to these.
At the end I wish to all portfolio owners to get the best clients and, to make this post more valuable, to share with us their thoughts about what supposes the existence of a portfolio and what should be done to make it more and more profitable.
